Uses for LASIK Goggles

Uses for LASIK Goggles

At Maida Custom Vision, we utilize the most advanced and effective technologies to ensure the safety, comfort, and satisfaction of patients who undergo LASIK eye surgery. From our wavefront mapping system to the revolutionary IntraLase® laser that allows us to perform completely blade-free LASIK, our exceptionally talented surgeon has access to all the best that modern ophthalmic technology has to offer. However, the success of LASIK also depends on some good old-fashioned low-tech appliances, as well. At our eye care center in Jacksonville, LASIK goggles are among those basic appliances that help to ensure proper healing after surgery.

Why LASIK Goggles Are Important

It is in our nature as human beings to want to rub our eyes instinctively. Unfortunately, rubbing your eyes after undergoing LASIK can cause the corneal flap created at the outset of surgery to become dislodged, increasing the risk of complications such as infection or scratching of the newly reshaped cornea. Even if you are careful in avoiding rubbing or other contact with your eyes during your waking hours, you may accidentally cause harm to your eyes in your sleep, whether by rubbing them, burying your head in your pillow, or scratching or poking that might occur due to restlessness. The primary purpose for LASIK goggles is to protect your eyes from trauma, thereby improving your chances of a quick healing period and optimal long-term results.

Are the Goggles Comfortable?

The goggles are quite comfortable, with soft foam edges that protect the skin from irritation. They are certainly comfortable enough that most of our patients report being able to sleep extremely well while wearing them. Although they are comfortable, they are also hard wearing and will provide good protection for your eyes.

How Long Will You Have to Wear LASIK Goggles?

You will be advised to wear your LASIK goggles for the rest of the day after your surgery, when your eyes will most likely be itchy and dry, and the temptation to rub them will be at its greatest. You are advised to  wear the goggles while you sleep for a week to two weeks after surgery, when your eyes will be at their most vulnerable to damage if you scratch or otherwise disturb them.

If you participate in sports of any sort, but particularly group sports, you will want to invest in athletic goggles to protect your eyes. These goggles should be worn whenever you play sports, especially during the first few months after surgery.

The more care you take in protecting your eyes, the more likely you will be pleased with the outcome of your LASIK surgery. Wearing your LASIK goggles as advised is essential to proper healing, the avoidance of infection, and the long-term health of your eyes.
