The Difference between Standard and Premium IOLs

The Difference between Standard and Premium IOLs

Many age-related vision problems, including cataracts, require specific treatment options. Cataract laser surgery can be performed to break up and remove a lens clouded over by a cataract so that it can be replaced with an intraocular lens, or IOL.

IOLs treat cataracts, but at Maida Custom Vision, we offer PCIOLs, or premium intraocular lenses, that not only treat cataracts, but also address other forms of vision impairment, including presbyopia. We are happy to discuss standard vs. premium IOLs with our Jacksonville, FL patients so they can determine which is more beneficial for their unique situation.

Standard IOLs

During any lens-based refractive surgery, whether it be cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange, the natural lens of the eye will need to be replaced with an artificial, or intraocular lens. The intraocular lens, or IOL, takes over the role of the natural lens, which is to bend light rays that enter the eye so they can be focused to create a clear image.

A standard IOL is one that is monofocal, meaning that it improves vision at just one distance. A standard IOL improves a patient’s distance vision. While a standard IOL does treat cataracts, and improve a patient’s distance vision, most patients will need to rely on glasses to improve near and intermediate vision.

Premium IOLs

Premium IOLs provide a better range of vision after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. At Maida Custom Vision, we offer a wide range of premium IOLs that can meet the unique needs of each of our patients. Because these lenses can treat cataracts while improving distance, intermediate, and near vision, most patients don’t need to rely on glasses after being treated with a premium IOL.

Some of the premium IOLs available to our patients include:

  • Crystalens: Crystalens is a premium IOL that was modeled after the human eye. It is meant to treat cataracts while using the eye muscles to flex and accommodate so that a patient can enjoy clear vision whether reading a book, working on the computer, or driving their car.
  • TRULIGN™ Toric IOL: TRULIGN™ Toric IOL is an intraocular lens that is designed for patients who suffer from astigmatism. This lens can be customized to address each patient’s unique degree of astigmatism, providing a wide range of clear vision.
  • AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOL: The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOL uses patented optical technology to optimally distribute light to near and far focal points, based on the lighting. This revolutionary technology not only enhances the quality of a patient’s vision, but can also result in improved vision for night driving.

With these premium IOLs, we can provide patients with clearer vision while greatly reducing, or completely eliminating, their need for corrective lenses. It is this advantage that makes premium IOLs the preferred method of lens-based refractive surgery for most of our patients.
