The Safety Profile of PRK

One of the reasons that PRK has such a high success rate is that it has an exceptional safety profile. Although it is associated with risks, as is any surgical procedure, serious complications are extremely rare, especially when candidates are carefully screened. It is particularly well suited for patients with thinner corneas for whom LASIK might be considered a risky procedure. While LASIK requires the creation of a hinged flap in the outermost layer of the cornea, the epithelial layer, PRK simply removes the epithelial layer altogether. As a result, PRK avoids the number-one complication associated with LASIK, namely complications with the corneal flap. These complications often result from patients with thin corneas being allowed to undergo the LASIK procedure.
