ICL vs. LASIK

ICL vs. LASIK

At Maida Custom Vision, we strive to provide our patients with the most comprehensive range of high-quality vision restoration options available. In doing so, we aim not only to relieve our patients from their dependence on glasses and contact lenses, but also to give them the most acute and vivid vision they have had in their lives. Modern ophthalmology offers more possible solutions than ever before, and we are pleased to provide the most advanced and effective of these at our practice.

For patients of our vision correction center in Jacksonville, ICL – implantable contact lens – technology joins LASIK eye surgery as one of the safest and most reliable ways to provide patients with vision of extraordinary clarity and crispness. Which one of these exceptional vision restoration options might be best suited for you? The best way to find out is to meet with our vision correction experts at Maida Custom Vision for a private, confidential consultation. Until then, however, we invite you to read the following basic information about these two procedures to gain some context for understanding how they might help you.

LASIK

Over the past decade and a half, LASIK has allowed millions of people worldwide to bid farewell to their glasses and contact lenses and see the world through new eyes. While the procedure has always been effective at correcting such common visual errors as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, modern custom LASIK allows our esteemed eye surgeon, Dr. Jerry Maida, to correct even the tiniest flaws in the shape of the cornea. These flaws, known as higher order aberrations, are unique to each individual eye. By creating an extremely precise wavefront map of the eye, and using this map to guide the excimer laser, Dr. Maida can perform a truly customized procedure.

Furthermore, our patients can benefit from the IntraLase® laser system, which allows Dr. Maida to create the flap in the cornea through which the LASIK procedure is performed without the mechanical microkeratome blade used in traditional LASIK. Patients who undergo custom bladeless LASIK increase the odds that they will achieve clear, crisp uncorrected vision.

Implantable Contact Lenses (ICLs)

Implantable contact lenses, or ICLs, are an outstanding alternative to LASIK, especially for those patients who are not good candidates for LASIK or another laser vision correction procedure. Unlike the intraocular lenses used during cataract surgery, ICLs do not replace the natural lenses of the eyes. Instead, they work with the natural lenses to provide excellent vision at all distances. Treatment with ICLs is considered extremely safe for patients who have extreme refractive errors, dry eye syndrome, oddly shaped corneas, thin corneas, certain illnesses, and other conditions that may make them unsuitable for LASIK. ICLs are also potentially ideal for patients who do not want to undergo a procedure such as LASIK that alters the natural anatomy of their eyes.
