Risks of LASIK Surgery

Risks of LASIK Surgery

So many people would like to experience clear, excellent vision without the need for glasses and contacts. This is possible thanks to advances in laser vision correction. Already, millions of people around the world have benefited from undergoing LASIK eye surgery. It offers clear vision and great results.

We receive many questions at our practice regarding the risks and complications associated with LASIK surgery. We’d like to take a few moments right now to consider these matters for your benefit.

About LASIK

Some basics first about LASIK. LASIK is a refractive surgery procedure, which means that it is performed in order to reshape the cornea, the clear, frontal portion of the eye. When the cornea is reshaped, light passes through the eye and focuses properly on the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

Are there risks and complications associated with LASIK?

Since LASIK is a surgery, there are risks and potential complications associated with LASIK. During the consultation process, your LASIK surgeon will be sure to go over all of your risks and benefits in full detail. This is to ensure that you have realistic expectations about the surgery and what is involved.

Common LASIK Risks/Complications

Some of the most common LASIK risks and complications are as follows:

  • Flap complications – A flap must be created in the cornea in order to perform the laser reshaping.
  • Overcorrection or undercorrection – Sometimes after LASIK, a patient’s vision may be overcorrected or unercorrected rather than achieving optimal vision.
  • Persistent dry eye syndrome – Dry eye occurs after LASIK as part of the healing process, though some patients will experience dry eye for many months or even years after surgery.
  • Infection – It’s possible for the eye to become infected during surgery. (Note that infection is a risk in all surgeries.)

How We Can Address Post-Surgical Complications

Many complications after the LASIK surgery has been performed can be addressed through corrective or secondary surgeries. It depends on the nature of the complication and the unique situation of the patient. We will be sure to discuss corrective matters with you in greater detail as needed during your visit.

How We Minimize Post-Surgical Risks and Complications

Our team is committed to using the latest techniques and technologies out there to ensure that your LASIK experience is as safe as possible. That means the use of computer-guided custom LASIK technology and the bladeless IntraLase system. This reduces the chance of human error and improves results overall.

How You Can Minimize Post-Surgical Risks

Sometimes complications occur due to factors or events outside of the surgical suite. After you undergo LASIK surgery, you will be given instructions for post-surgical care. It’s important that you follow these instructions to the letter to ensure the best possible results.
